We should take action on insights

Dear Analytics Community,

We need to talk, or should I say, I need to say something to you. I know from plenty of past conversations I had with many of you how concerned most of us are when it comes to climate change. This might be based on our daily work with data and our ability to interpret scientific data more easily. Moreover, I know there are many parents in the community who also worry about the future of their kids.

Still, most of you don’t hesitate to jump on the next plane to go to a Conference, or any other Community event. Seeing how many people went to MeasureCamp London or WAW Copenhagen this week, makes me question our ability to take action on the insights we have. We behave like stakeholders who don’t want to see what data tells us and still act the way they think is best (perhaps for them).

I love that our community is so connected and that people are willing to put in significant effort to see each other and to learn, I really do. We should still make this effort, but with a climate-friendly approach. Start visiting conferences and events, you can visit by train, electrical car or any other transportation method that is climate-friendly. We don’t need to go extra far, just to learn from others. There will be “local” events which are great to support and you can still learn.

And don’t start with “my few flights make no impact”, because everything we do makes an impact. We should start to act like stakeholders we wish to work with.

Thanks for listening.
